Etymology

From Latin 'perfunctorius' (careless, negligent), from 'perfunctus', past participle of 'perfungi' (to go through with, discharge), from 'per-' (through, completely) + 'fungi' (to perform). Irony: 'going through completely' came to mean doing the bare minimum.
